4. Intercomprehension in Maritime English

LINKS to the study materials BELOW! English is the lingua franca at sea. International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations stipulate that seafarers, and in particular officers of the watch, achieve levels of competency in English, allowing them to communicate clearly, effectively and, above all, safely. The IMO also requires the use of Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) during communication on the bridge as well as for ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication.

Maritime English thus constitutes a compulsory subject in naval academies and academies of the merchant marine worldwide. In addition to more traditional courses, various online learning tools, such as MarEng and MarEng Plus, already exist, providing the learner/cadet with a wide range of material designed to assist the acquisition of Maritime English.

The objective of this module is therefore not to develop a learning tool for Maritime English but to develop intercomprehension skills and promote learning strategies which will facilitate the learner’s ability to learn a language, in this case Maritime English.

The Maritime English section includes:

Ship Familiarisation: Activities (matching pictures and talk in many accents)

Can you read me? Activities 1-2 + 3-4 + 5-6
